Delaware Museum of Nature and Science opens to the public May 23 after $10.8 renovation

Fifty years after originally opening to the public, the fully-renovated and re-imagined Delaware Museum of Nature and Science welcomes the public starting May 23

After an extensive $10.8 million, 17-month renovation project, the Delaware Museum of Nature and Science opens to the public on Monday, May 23. The museum, formerly the Delaware Museum of Natural History, closed at the end of 2020 for the project. All of the exhibits – many in place since 1972 – were removed and the walls were taken down to the studs. Installation of the new exhibits has been ongoing since the end of 2021.

“We’ve completely shed that dusty, old museum perception. The Delaware Museum of Nature and Science is dynamic, engaging, interactive, relevant, and modern,” Executive Director Halsey Spruance said. “Our focus is on what we know about nature and science, why it matters to us, and what we can do to protect the environment. There’s a huge emphasis on how we are all connected and how our actions matter.”

New galleries include:

  • Regional Journey Gallery: Stroll across a giant floor map of the state and explore deciduous and mixed forests, the Bald Cypress Swamp, a saltmarsh, dunes, and the Delaware Bay. Designated areas such as the Fair Play Foundation Field Station and the DuPont Research Headquarters provide an opportunity to learn what is happening in our local region and beyond.
  • Alison K. Bradford Global Journey Gallery: A giant floor map of the world occupies the center of this gallery, surrounded by three land-based ecosystems, including a tropical rainforest, Arctic tundra and African savanna, along with three different ocean environments (shallow, mid-water, and deep). The ecosystems demonstrate nature’s diversity, the interdependency of life, and how humans play the biggest role in change.
  • Ellice & Rosa McDonald Foundation PaleoZone: Meet the creatures that lived in the Mid-Atlantic during the Cretaceous Period. Skeletons of the fearsome Dryptosaurus dinosaur, the flying “bat lizard” Nyctosaur, and the aquatic giant Mosasaur are joined by smaller Cretaceous specimens.

Other new exhibit spaces include the Tree of Life in the atrium with a visual interpretation of the Tree of Life, depicting the evolution of organisms over billions of years and the relationships between them in increasingly diverse branches. Adjacent to the Atrium, the Bill & Denise Spence Discovery Gallery offers rotating, hands-on exhibits. Opening exhibits include Delaware Mineralogical Society, First State Robotics and the University of Delaware, in addition to the museum’s Collections & Research Division.

New amenities include the Rest, Relax, Recharge café with prepackaged sandwiches, salads and snacks from Jamestown Catering, along with coffee, water, and other beverages. The Delaware Community Foundation Respite Room is a dedicated, calming space for visitors with sensory challenges and developmental disorders to take a break, as well as being a quiet and private option for nursing parents.

Visit Information: The museum will be open seven days a week from 9:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Admission price is $12.95 for ages 3 and up, $3.95 for toddlers ages 1-2, and free for infants under 12 months. There is a $1 discount for tickets purchased in advance online.

Admission is free for DelMNS members. For the first year, members of Delaware Art Museum, Hagley Museum & Library, Mt. Cuba, Winterthur Museum, Garden & Library, and Tyler Arboretum also receive free general admission.

The MICHELIN Guide makes reservations in Toronto

123

  • MICHELIN Guide inspectors will discover and celebrate Toronto’s restaurants
  • Toronto becomes the first MICHELIN Guide destination in Canada

TORONTO, May 10, 2022 — Michelin and Destination Toronto today revealed an expansion of The MICHELIN Guide, with the announcement of the MICHELIN Guide Toronto, making it the first Canadian destination for the selection.

A new chapter begins in Toronto, which features global eats and charming cafes as well as high-end dining experiences. It’s a city where top chefs want to establish a presence and where emerging chefs nurture their culinary talent – both drawing on locally produced ingredients unique to Ontario.

The inaugural edition of the MICHELIN Guide Toronto will be announced in fall 2022, with a selection of restaurants receiving honors. Inspectors award MICHELIN Stars – One, Two or Three – to unparalleled cuisine. They also bestow Bib Gourmand ratings on restaurants that offer great quality food at good prices, and they award the MICHELIN Green Star to restaurants involved in sustainable gastronomy.

“For the first time in its history, the MICHELIN Guide lands in Canada, and our inspectors are excited to experience the impressive culinary landscape of Toronto,” said Gwendal Poullennec, international director of the MICHELIN Guides. “This first selection for Canada’s largest city, and our first in the country, will represent the local flavors, international inspiration, and distinct creativity that makes Toronto’s dining scene world-class.”

In order to present a full and independent selection in the fall, Michelin inspectors already have begun visiting restaurants in Toronto. They will continue during the next few months. Michelin inspectors are meticulous in maintaining their anonymity. They make dining reservations anonymously and pay for all their meals to ensure they are treated the same as any other customer.

“This is an exciting moment for our city as Toronto will become the first MICHELIN Guide destination in Canada,” said Mayor John Tory. “This further bolsters our reputation as a world destination for food and cuisine. Our diverse city, along with the many renowned chefs who call Toronto home, have helped us get to this point and to be able to showcase all of the wonderful restaurants. A big thank you to everyone who has made this possible: MICHELIN, Destination Toronto, Destination Ontario and Destination Canada. While we await the guide, I encourage Toronto residents to continue supporting and celebrating the revival of Toronto restaurants by dining in locally to sample the diverse culinary offerings our restaurants have to offer.”

“Toronto’s culinary scene is as diverse as the city itself, and the MICHELIN Guide Toronto is the perfect way to celebrate our culinary community,” said Scott Beck, President & CEO of Destination Toronto. “It will be a powerful way to share our culinary capabilities with new audiences from around the world. We’re so proud to partner with Michelin and our destination partners Destination Ontario and Destination Canada, to bring the MICHELIN Guide to Canada for the first time.”

The MICHELIN Guide is constantly observing the evolution of culinary destinations around the world, and the discovery process began in Toronto four years ago. Michelin works with Destination Marketing Organizations, or tourism boards, to promote the travel industry in the respective locations; however, the MICHELIN Guide selections process remains completely independent. While selections remain fully independently determined by Michelin inspectors, Michelin is working with Destination Toronto on marketing and promotion activities only.

The upcoming MICHELIN Guide Toronto selection will follow Michelin’s historical methodology, based on five universal criteria, to ensure each destination’s selection equity: 1) quality products; 2) the mastery of flavors; 3) the mastery of cooking techniques; 4) the personality of the chef in the cuisine; 5) consistency between each visit (each restaurant is inspected several times a year).

The new restaurant selections will join Michelin’s selection of extraordinary hotels in Toronto, curated by Tablet Hotels, the hotel experts at the MICHELIN Guide.

LexisNexis Adds Significant New Work Intake and Automation Features to CounselLink

Extensive enhancements to the industry’s leading Enterprise Legal Management platform make it easier for corporate legal departments to do their jobs more efficiently and cost effectively

Raleigh, NC – LexisNexis® CounselLink® today announced the Spring release of its industry-leading enterprise legal management (ELM) solution. This release delivers significant new features focusing on work intake, task automation, enhanced reporting and other features to help corporate legal departments streamline operations, increase productivity and demonstrate their value to the business.

A recent industry survey notes that Workload/Resource Bandwidth is the #1 challenge facing corporate legal departments, and that Legal Service Request/Intake technologies are second only to A.I. in terms of planned implementations over the next two years. According to the 2022 ACC Chief Legal Officer Survey, 60% anticipate an increase in work volume just due to privacy and regulatory enforcement. In addition, pandemic-related litigation is expected to steadily increase throughout 2022, centered around business interruption and breach of contract suits, insurance claims, employment disputes, bankruptcy, and real estate litigation. All of this puts enormous strain on corporate legal departments in terms of capacity, managing workloads and costs, and balancing the legal and business needs of the organization.

“Now more than ever, corporate legal departments need advanced work intake tools and automation capabilities to manage the huge influx in demand for their services stemming from increased legal and regulatory obligations, pandemic-related issues and requests to support more non-legal business functions,” said CounselLink Vice President of Product Management, Aaron Pierce. “The new tools and capabilities we’ve added into CounselLink will help legal departments work more efficiently and effectively and give them big-picture insights to better manage demand, allocate resources, control costs and plan for future needs.”

Among the many new features and enhancements, this spring release includes:

  • Enhanced Work Intake System: New legal services request feature adds more flexibility and capabilities such as the ability to create distinct request forms, manage user groups, manage request flow and allow external user requests, such as outside counsel and vendors.
  • System-Triggered Events: Allows users to build rules that automate actions and next steps such as assigning a matter to an individual based on matter type, adding a task set when a matter is created and other pre-defined activities.
    • Expanded Work Intake Reporting: Delivers data-driven insights on request volume (to help measure volume, frequency, and type of service requests) and assignments (to help understand staff resource capacity and matter or activity work status).
    • Related Matters: Adds ability to search for and link one matter to another within CounselLink, create matter pages and pre-populate information in new matters based on the original.

CounselLink’s advanced legal work management capabilities, including rich collaboration, effective workflow management and automation tools, and robust analytics and reporting capabilities, optimize corporate legal operations and provide data-driven insights that can save organizations an average of 8-10% on legal costs each year. Going the Distance for Brain Injury Races into its 35th Year

Miraculous Brain Injury Survivor, KCPD Officer Moss, champions the race as the 2022 Honoree to support the Brain Injury Association of Greater Kansas City and Kansas

Kansas City’s connection to the Memorial Day Race, Going the Distance for Brain Injury, is personal. Friends of Kansas Citian Amy Thompson launched the race 35 years ago in her honor as she fought to survive a debilitating brain injury. They hoped to gain awareness and support for individuals and their family members affected by brain injury.

Sponsored by the Brain Injury Association of Kansas and Greater Kansas City, Going the Distance for Brain Injury race is the successor of that original race organized by Amy’s friends. The 2022 event is Monday, May 30, at 8 am on Memorial Day in Loose Park, just south of the Plaza. This Kansas City racing tradition includes 5K and 10K runs and a 1.5-mile walk, a virtual race, and children’s event.

At age 24, Amy Thompson’s life changed after an attempted robbery that left her with a brain injury. Her friends and family offered Amy encouragement and support. Several years after her injury Amy passed away but her legacy is still associated with today’s race.

“Thompson’s story and her friends’ efforts made a lasting impact. People often still refer to the race as the Amy Thompson Run and feel close to the cause that impacts someone in the U.S. every eighteen seconds,” said Robin Abramowitz, Executive Director of the Brain Injury Association of Greater Kansas City and Kansas. “Since then, many advances to help those with brain injuries have been made. One such example is in our 2022 race honoree, Kansas City Police Department Officer Tyler Moss.”

Officer Moss was given a one percent chance of living after being shot in the head by a gunman on July 2, 2020.  Police on the scene rushed Moss to what is now University Health (formerly Truman Medical Center). His recovery was miraculous and reflected Moss’s tenacity to relearn everything from eating to talking to walking. Moss currently is working at the KCPD Police Academy, retraining and mentoring other officers.

Abramowitz added, “Tyler’s journey offers hope and sparks the conversation about brain injuries. The BIAKS-GKC connects people to resources to improve outcomes for individuals living with brain injuries. The race is one of our largest fundraisers, so we encourage everyone to register, participate in the run or walk, and have fun for this good cause.”

Kansas City Chiefs cheerleaders will be at the race, and former wide receiver for the Kansas City Chiefs, Marc Boerigter will serve as Honorary Walk for Thought Chair. He is a record-holder for the longest touchdown reception in Chiefs and NFL history. Marc is an active member of the KC Chiefs Ambassadors and has hosted the Chiefs pregame show for the last 11 years on a local sports radio station.

Participants in the race will receive a commemorative 2022 race shirt designed by former race honoree James McGinnis, who received a traumatic brain injury (TBI) during a football game his senior year at Olathe East High School. He was given a seven percent chance to live yet beat the odds and is now an artist spreading his message of love.

Race details and registration are available at www.biaksrun.org

Newristics study in finserv industry proves that innovation in market research can lead to winning messaging campaigns.

Message testing research has long been an ignored part of market research, with little methodological or technological innovation over the years. Even the most basic needs that market researchers have in message testing have still not been met:

• Still can’t test a lot of messages in one study
• Still can’t get good separation in scores between good/better/best messages
• Still have to ask respondents to explain likes/dislikes
• Still have no way of improving messages as they are tested

Current message testing solutions do not help marketing teams with campaign readiness and there exists an unaddressed gap between what marketing needs vs. what is handed over by market research. For example, while market research delivers top messages, what marketing really needs to execute a campaign is optimal message bundles and story flows for every channel and segment. Consequently, a significant amount of judgment is applied by marketing teams to get to translate market research results into omni-channel, personalized campaigns.

A pioneer in the use of decision heuristics science and AI to improve messaging, Newristics recognized that behavioral science and machine learning algorithms had the potential to transform message testing research. The idea led to the birth of CMO (Choose Message Optimizer), a message testing algorithm that is designed to deliver better campaign readiness out of market research. Built with 3 years of pure R&D, CMO significantly improves campaign readiness by providing the optimal message map for each channel and customer segment, ready for execution.

To demonstrate the power of CMO innovation, a large-scale message testing study was conducted using in-market messaging from a large financial brand (Chase Bank). The study tested over 400 messages across several attributes, with over 1,000 respondents. The messages were tested with consumers in an online survey using the CMO algorithm.

In-market messages from Chase Bank were tested against 100s of alternate articulations that were created using decision heuristics. Winning message bundles were then identified from the survey data using machine learning algorithms. Improvement in messaging from Chase in-market controls vs. new optimized message bundles was measured using preference share analysis. Message bundles for different channels and customer segments were predicted by CMO algorithms.

The results from the study were sensational, with the CMO-optimized message bundles outperforming current in-market messaging across ALL types of campaigns, with increase in preference share ranging between 30% – 50%. The findings of this study are especially powerful because the improvement in messaging campaigns was achieved with ZERO assistance from the Chase marketing team and simply relied on the power of decision heuristics science and AI to optimize messaging.

Bruno Pischiutta Extends SPA’s Screenplay to a Trilogy of Sequential Feature Films that Sets, With Powerful Artistic Force, the Cultural Climax of the Conflict Over Free Speech

British actress and dancer Stephanie Tripp will star in the trilogy written and directed by Bruno Pischiutta and produced by Daria Trifu.

In the calm and relaxed atmosphere of a small cocktail party, director Bruno Pischiutta told members of his entourage and a few close friends that he has decided to expand the story of the film “Spa” into a trilogy consisting of feature films that follow a sequential storyline.

“I want to tell,” said Pischiutta, “one of the best stories Hollywood has ever brought to the screen, an extremely popular story that will also be emblematic of contemporary human relationships and will be a turning point, a milestone, in defining the cultural conflict over free speech. To achieve this, I need nearly five hours of screen time, because the standard length of a single film would be significantly limiting.” Pischiutta has been writing the script for more than a year, and expects to complete it by the end of the summer.

Bruno Pischiutta

British actress and dancer Stephanie Tripp will star in the three films. The cast consists of approximately 50 international English-speaking actors, most of whom are members of Global Film Studio’s talent agency, the Global Film Actors Agency.

Stephanie Tripp

In an earlier statement by Pischiutta on the topicality of the subject, the author said, “Love and sexual relationships are more complicated today than ever before. They are often interracial, and sometimes involve LGBT characters in a kaleidoscope of different nationalities, traditions, and ways. Love relationships are not caused and motivated by logic but by passion, and the power of passion gives them life and governs them in a constant fluctuating variation that is always interesting and often surprising.”

The film will be distributed worldwide by globalcinema.online, Global Film Studio’s paid streaming service for non-violent films. The streaming channel expects one to two million viewers to watch the film in its first weekend of release.

Employee Handbooks Are Giving HR Departments A Headache, Survey Shows

Employee Handbooks Are Giving HR Departments A Headache, Survey Shows

More than six in 10 employers struggle to get employees to read the employee handbook

New York City (May 5, 2022) – A new survey published by XpertHR suggests HR departments have an employee handbook headache. When it comes to handbook-related challenges, getting employees to read it, keeping it compliant with state law and training managers for its enforcement are the top three challenges HR managers face. As reported in XpertHR’s 2022 Employee Handbook survey, over three-fifths of employers rated the following issues as “somewhat” or “very” challenging:
XpertHR_Handbooks 2022_ChallengesChart

  • Getting employees to read the handbook (68%),
  • Keeping their employee handbooks compliant with state law (66%), and
  • Providing training for managers so they can enforce the handbook (64%).

According to XpertHR Senior Legal Editor, Policy Solutions, Melissa Silver, JD, the challenge of training opens a window of opportunity for employers. The survey found that nearly one-half (47%) of employers do not provide any employee handbook training.

“Employee handbooks don’t just cover company values and culture, benefits and compliance, but they also inform employees of work rules and expectations. If managers do not enforce work rules uniformly, this could expose a company to litigation,” Silver said. “Our data suggests a real need for HR teams to train managers on the role of the employee handbook and how to properly enforce the policies within the handbook.”

The survey also revealed the methods HR departments use for both distributing the employee handbook and encouraging employees to read the handbook.

  • Employee intranet, hard copy and email comprise the top three ways organizations distribute their handbooks and revisions.
  • The top two ways organizations encourage employees to read the handbook are: requiring them to acknowledge receipt of the handbook (91%) and encouraging them to read it during onboarding (70%).

XpertHR’s Employee Handbooks Survey 2022 was conducted from February 22 to March 18, 2022. The survey included responses from 366 U.S. employers of various industries and workforce sizes, representing over 460,000 workers. The survey report explores the critical subject of employee handbooks, such as preparation, distribution, approaches to multi-jurisdictional compliance, challenges, resources and more.

MICHELIN Guide Spotlights DC’s Brightest Stars

  • Inspectors add four new One MICHELIN Star eateries in Washington
  • 24 restaurants achieve MICHELIN Star status
  • Four new Bib Gourmand restaurants make the list

WASHINGTON,
May 4, 2022 — The MICHELIN Guide Washington DC has added four One MICHELIN Star restaurants to the district’s constellation of Stars. Altogether, 24 restaurants made the list.

“The MICHELIN Guide inspectors found that Washington’s culinary scene has risen to the challenges of the past year,” said Gwendal Poullennec, international director of the MICHELIN Guides. “The chefs and restaurant teams in the district continue to show off their meticulous creativity. We are pleased to celebrate four new One MICHELIN Star restaurants and offer continued praise to the returning Starred restaurants in the city.”

Here are the new One MICHELIN Star restaurants, with inspector notes from each (inspector comments in full on the MICHELIN Guide website and mobile app):

Albi (Middle Eastern cuisine)

Located in the pulsating Navy Yard, this dining room is hip and lively. Arranged around a roaring hearth, the space features an inviting bar at one end and chef’s counter at the other. À la carte is the way to go, but guests may just do better with the hyper-seasonal prix-fixe. Regardless, Chef/owner Michael Rafidi’s dishes are full of surprises as he weaves in the flavors of the eastern Mediterranean with myriad local ingredients.

Imperfecto: The Chef’s Table (Latin American cuisine)

Boasting all the buzz of a hornet’s nest, this soaring box of glass and marble virtually reaches for the sky. Inside, it’s decked out with brass accents, terra-cotta and a tight counter positioned directly under Chef Enrique Limardo’s perch. Here, he prepares an elaborate tasting, which is a far cry from the main, more casual menu; it’s a celebration of Latin flavors, ace ingredients and exacting technique. Meals, served by the chef himself, take on an intimate if long form.

Oyster Oyster (Vegetarian cuisine)

It is highly rare for a tasting menu to leave one feeling, well, energized, but so goes the imaginative cooking at this vegetable-focused gem. Who knew that turnip juice makes for good bread or that oysters can turn into a creamy and yet entirely creamless sauce? Chef Rob Rubba did, and his creations are delicious insights into what is possible with vegetables.

Reverie (Contemporary cuisine)

Tucked off a quiet Georgetown alley, it almost feels like this secret gem is perfectly content with not being found. Accoutred with smooth wood and clean lines, this unusual delight flaunts a contemporary Nordic vibe; enveloped by melodic tunes, the dining room is attended to by a disarmingly warm staff. Nab a seat at the counter to witness Chef Johnny Spero’s artistry. His cooking skews Mid-Atlantic, with a laser-focus on seasonality and inspired flavors.

Bib Gourmands

The MICHELIN Guide inspectors added four restaurants to the Bib Gourmand list, which recognizes eateries for great food at a great value: Daru, Dauphine’s, Honeymoon Chicken and Menya Hosaki.

Special Awards

In addition to the highly anticipated Bib Gourmand and Star awards, the Guide announced two special awards. Sommelier of the Year, presented by Wine Access, was awarded to Nicole Ramée, Alisa Watts and the team at Xiquet. The Exceptional Cocktails Award was awarded to Will Patton and the teams at Bresca and Jônt.
