Are lawyers shunning traditional firms in favour of self-employment? A new report investigates how fee-sharing is changing the industry

The number of fee-sharing law firms is growing. But will they replace traditional law firms? Unpicking the benefits and drawbacks of working as a legal consultant, this report looks at why lawyers are leaving traditional firms, and what these firms can do to keep them.

LONDON, UK, 29 March, 2022 – Today, LexisNexis Legal & Professional, a leading global provider of legal information and analytics has released an investigative report entitled “Rise of the legal consultants.” The report looks at why, by 2026, it is predicted that one-third of all lawyers in the United Kingdom may leave traditional firms and become self-employed legal consultants at fee-sharing firms.

For centuries, the legal partnership model has been honed and perfected. So, when a new model comes along promising partner-like returns without the strains and demands – there is no surprise that it gains attention. Using in-depth interviews with legal consultants from across the sector, the report digs into the compelling financial incentives luring lawyers into fee-sharing firms, the benefits and risks this model presents and what clients really think. Shedding management and leadership responsibilities to spend more time with clients is, on the surface, a persuasive argument.

Rather than suggesting traditional law firms face a terminal decline or that fee-sharing is a short-lived fad, this report argues that firms must learn from their fee-sharing cousins. From new ways of billing, new technologies that increase efficiency or even better ways of retaining clients – traditional firms can adopt new ways of working that will help mitigate talent and client retention pressures.

Yet, as the report reveals, the fee-sharing model is not perfect or suitable for all. A flexible work-life balance may be appealing compared to the traditional (long) working hours in law firms but has its downsides. In return for keeping up to three-quarters of client billings, legal consultants must manage their own workloads and client relationships. With no referrals, limited back-office support and no team of junior associates to rely on – the delivery pressure can be high. Legal consultants are responsible for their own business development. An intensive case mustn’t detract from the need to keep an eye on the business pipeline.

“It’s easy to argue that a model that offers a savvy lawyer more money in the pocket would be a no-brainer,” said Dylan Brown, the report’s editor. “But not all lawyers have the desire to be self-sufficient. If firms can learn from the technology adoption and innovative ways of working used by legal consultants – they can tap into this growing trend.”

The report looks at the client response to legal consultants and fee-sharing models and reflects on how some of the UK’s biggest law firms have reacted and adapted.

LexisNexis Launches Global API Developer’s Portal to Deliver Industry-Leading Data, Content and Insights Directly Into Lawyers’ Established Workflows

Portal creates a single ecosystem for all LexisNexis APIs, connecting attorneys with the most valuable legal information available – when and where they need it

LEGALWEEK – NEW YORKLexisNexis Legal & Professional®, a leading global provider of information and analytics, today unveiled a new API Developer Portal that allows law firms and legal departments to integrate the unrivaled legal data, content and analytics from a variety of LexisNexis applications and data sources into their existing systems, applications and processes. By delivering information and insights exactly where and when attorneys need it, LexisNexis streamlines their legal workflows and helps them become better informed and more efficient and productive.

The self-serve portal allows organizations to build a flexible, scalable data environment that addresses their unique use cases, unlocking actionable insights from internal and external data sources from within their organization’s intranet, dashboard or practice page. Its platform-agnostic APIs grant access to LexisNexis legal, news, court docket, business and analytics content, enriched through an unmatched data classification and normalization process, so the integrated data is timely, relevant and accurate.

“LexisNexis recognizes that many organizations are investing heavily to enrich their proprietary data collections in order to make their attorneys more productive,” said Jeff Pfeifer, Chief Product Officer, LexisNexis North America and UK. “Our new API Developer Portal enables organizations to enrich and normalize their internal data by directly incorporating our industry-leading data and content. Doing so helps organizations unlock the insights in their data and minimize workflow disruptions.”

Currently, the Developer Portal contains APIs that connect to a broad collection of legal content as well as specific products, such as Lexis+, CourtLink, Context and State Net, with additional APIs being developed. A new Lex Machina API is available immediately and will be integrated into the portal as well. Users will have access to new ‘sandbox’ capabilities to try API functionality, extensive data schema information and robust technical documentation for assistance in local deployment.

APIs allow organizations to create customized workflows or new applications by decoupling the data from its original user interface or enabling specific features and functionalities through its WIRE framework:

  • Workflow: Incorporates LexisNexis news, content, data, analytics and insights directly into an organization’s work environment.
  • Integration: Enables organizations to combine LexisNexis data and analytics with internal and third-party data in a single search and access associated documents without switching between multiple applications.
  • Recency: Alerts users to changes in cases, dockets, legislation, regulations or news mentioning issues, clients or prospects, and delivers them via email or to their work environment. It also allows users to access the associated documents or news story right from the alert.
  • Enrichment: Enables organizations to clean, normalize and tag their internal data to improve the accuracy and relevance of searches and better integrate with LexisNexis data and applications, such as Lex Machina and Context.

Exclusive Litigation Analytics Insights

The Lex Machina API gives organizations access to analytical data and insights they won’t find on any competitive platform, including case resolutions, damages, remedies, findings and the most accurate and current information available on attorneys, law firms and parties. The API keeps attorneys informed about critical case information, including what was actually litigated in a case, how it ended, whether damages were awarded, all parties involved and other critical information used to make strategic legal and business decisions.

Analytics data from Lex Machina can be integrated with an organization’s Client Relationship Management (CRM) system, matter management or other internal applications. The insights can also be accessed with one click via widgets on an organization’s internal dashboards, practice pages or intranet pages. No other analytics provider can match the data quality, quantity and accuracy of Lex Machina analytics.

“Our top priority at Lex Machina is to bring legal analytics to all areas of law to ensure that our clients are provided with the most up-to-date, accurate and relevant information,” said Karl Harris, CEO of Lex Machina. “Our new API makes Lex Machina data available wherever you need it to seamlessly support the day-to-day operations of lawyers and in-house counselors.”

LexisNexis technical teams are also available to help organizations integrate one or more of the API types into their systems, depending on the organization’s needs:

  • URL APIs: One-way, direct links to LexisNexis products, requiring minimal configuration
  • REST/Web Services: Deeper integration into the organization’s workflows, requiring local coding and engineering for customization
  • Bulk APIs: Optimizes the transfer of large data sets from one server to another, for use in data-mining, machine learning and predictive analytics initiatives

LexisNexis Rule of Law Foundation Finds 67% of Global Public Disapprove of Russian Military Invasion of Ukraine

Survey of more than 2,300 respondents across 90 countries reveals global sentiment around Russian military operations in Ukraine

NEW YORK – LexisNexis Legal & Professional®, a leading global provider of information and analytics, today released global data and public sentiments regarding the Ukrainian invasion. The ongoing feedback is being collected via the LexisNexis Rule of Law Monitor, which continuously surveys the world’s population on issues related to the Rule of Law.

The results demonstrate that 67% of the people polled disapprove of Russian military operations in the Ukraine – a number that increases to 76% outside of Asia.

Key Takeaways

  • Within Russia, less than half (47%) of the people polled approve of the invasion (27% disapprove)
  • Within the Ukraine, 88% of those polled disapprove, with 6% approving
  • Australia has the highest disapproval rating (96%) and the lowest approval rating (0%); Argentina also showed 0% approval towards the conflict
  • India had the highest approval rating (50%) – more than Russia itself
  • China and India had the lowest disapproval ratings after Russia (33% and 34%, respectively)
  • Across the globe, strong gender differences with female respondents (72%) significantly more likely to disapprove than males (62%)

“The LexisNexis Rule of Law Foundation strongly condemns the Russian invasion of Ukraine,” said Ian McDougall, President of the LexisNexis Rule of Law Foundation. “This is a clear violation of international law and the Rule of Law. We hope that by continuing to shed light on the global public condemnation of this war that it will help end the conflict sooner and restore peace and justice in Ukraine.”

“We believe that the Rule of Law is defined by equality under the law, transparency of law, an independent judiciary, and accessible legal remedy – and the stronger each of these components, the stronger the Rule of Law. We’re working to provide free and open data that enables citizens and nations to better understand each element of the Rule of Law and, in this case, world opinion on Russia’s breach of Rule of Law,” said Steve Carroll, VP Customer Insights at LexisNexis Legal & Professional.

BEEAH Energy and Chinook Sciences commence the development of region’s first Waste-to-Hydrogen Plant

  • Announcement made at UK pavilion in Expo 2020
  • Plant will produce enough hydrogen to fuel over 300 trucks and buses a day
  • Green hydrogen will be produced at a significantly lower cost than diesel and be sufficient for a large fleet of trucks and busses
  • Both companies work together to establish more facilities in the region
  • Facility will also produce high-grade activated carbon for environmental use

BEEAH Energy, a subsidiary of BEEAH Group, the Middle East’s leading sustainability pioneer, and UK-based Chinook Sciences, have signed an official agreement to commence the development of the region’s first waste-to-hydrogen plant to produce combined low-cost ground-breaking green hydrogen and high-quality activated carbon.

The official signing took place at the UK Pavilion, Expo 2020 Dubai, in the presence of Simon Penney, Her Majesty’s Trade Commissioner for the Middle East and Her Majesty’s Consul General for Dubai, as well as other dignitaries from the UK and UAE.

Building on its commitment for zero-waste cities and clean energy solutions, this project further demonstrates how BEEAH can address the twin challenge of unrecyclable waste and contributing to green mobility simultaneously.

Non-recyclable waste wood and plastic will be processed using Chinook RODECS gasification and pyrolysis technology, which will produce up to 18,000kg of green hydrogen a day at full operational capacity.

HE Khaled Al Huraimel Group CEO of BEEAH said: “As a sustainability leader in the Middle East, we are excited to be creating the first waste-to-hydrogen solution in the region and support the UAE government in its hydrogen economy ambitions, energy diversification and decarbonisation efforts.”

The UAE announced at the COP26 UN Climate Change Conference last November that it’s setting a target of a 25% global market share of low-carbon hydrogen by 2030.

He added, “BEEAH has always recognised the value of energy recovery from waste, and this new project will not only showcase the potential of waste-to-hydrogen, but it will also support a circular economy across multiple fronts throughout the region.”

Production of the green hydrogen will be significantly cheaper than that of fossil fuels. The plant will host a hydrogen fuelling station, equipped to provide enough fuel cell grade hydrogen for several large trucks and buses every day.

Dr. Rifat Chalabi, Chairman and co-founder of Chinook Sciences Group said: “We are excited to work with BEEAH Energy and use our patented RODECS gasification and pyrolysis technology in the UAE to produce fuel-cell grade hydrogen for their fleet. The technology breaks down hydrocarbons from waste through advanced thermal treatment to release and recover green hydrogen. Then, when the green hydrogen is used in vehicles, it emits only water as a by-product.”

The cost-efficiency and delivery of the green hydrogen comes from Chinook’s patented RODECS technology. Additionally, the plant’s unique operational concept allows it to run profitably even during a time that the hydrogen market is still developing. This will be achieved in the early months of operation by relying entirely on the production of the plant’s secondary revenue stream of activated carbon. The high-grade activated carbon produced will be used for environmental purposes as a high-grade filtration media to clean water resources and air, filtering harmful pollutants, including pathogens and viruses.

Simon Penney, Her Majesty’s Trade Commissioner for the Middle East and Her Majesty’s Consul General for Dubai, said: “The partnership between Chinook Sciences and BEEAH Energy to develop the region’s first Waste-to-Hydrogen plant is a fantastic example of UK and UAE innovation and ambition, contributing to the sustainable economic growth of both nations.”

As the hydrogen market start to grow the plant will gradually switch more of its operational hours away from activated carbon and toward green hydrogen production to meet hydrogen requirements.

Hailed as the “fuel of the future”, global demand for green hydrogen is rapidly growing. According to a report by Forbes, green hydrogen could supply up to 25% of the world’s energy needs and become a $10 trillion addressable market by 2050.

BEEAH’s Futuristic Headquarters is Ready for the Metaverse

Khaled Al Huraimel, Group CEO of BEEAH Group, reveals that Metaverse is an integral part of the new BEEAH Headquarters, modelling the office of the future

BEEAH Group has revealed that its highly anticipated Zaha Hadid headquarters, one of the smartest and most sustainable buildings in the world, will feature digital twin technology as a virtual parallel to its headquarters, aligning with the ‘Metaverse’.

With integrations for over 100 AI use cases, the BEEAH Headquarters is already the most AI-integrated workspace in the Middle East and is positioned as a model for the office of the future. One of the key technology integrations at the headquarters is the digital twin, which is a virtual replica of the headquarters physical structure and systems, tracking parameters and data in real-time. AI technologies then run simulations, studying the building’s occupancy rate, temperature and light preferences, as well as other variables. Finally, the AI proposes solutions or implements actions that will help realise energy ultra-efficiency.

The BEEAH Group CEO highlighted how the building was designed to be future-ready and go beyond the physical workplace, envisioning a future with remote and virtual working environments. “From the beginning, we have seen the importance of using digital twin technology. It not only enables sustainable operations at LEED Platinum standards, but also helped realise our digital-driven office of the future. Digital twin technology is an essential building block for a parallel reality workplace, such as the Metaverse. It allows synchronicity between the physical and virtual worlds where our employees and partners can benefit from a simultaneous experience at our headquarters both physically and virtually.”

”As we designed the office of the future, we sought to integrate the best technologies for an experience that combines the best of both the physical and virtual worlds. This aligns with our vision of the future workplace and preparing for Web3. We expect that as our businesses grow, metaverse workplaces, will increasingly become a requirement for convenient collaboration across geographies and across our group verticals,” the BEEAH Group CEO said.

The BEEAH Headquarters has several access control measures in place, from number plate recognition to guide drivers to the correct smart parking spot to facial recognition at a virtual concierge. For employees, a companion app also allows access to specific areas such as control rooms. In the near future, the BEEAH Group CEO envisions smart contracts and blockchain technology to provide the next level of convenience for employee access to different utilities and functions. “We will be able to centralise access control and employee identification for employees, through blockchain technology. This will further enhance security, from entry to physical spaces within the building and also virtual rooms. The Employee smart contracts will provide not just access to the HQ but also to several other utilities as part of their employment within the group,” Khaled Al Huraimel said.

Currently, meeting rooms in the BEEAH Headquarters feature the best technologies for employee comfort and productivity. In addition to automated adjustment for light and temperature based on occupancy for on-site employees, the rooms also facilitate hybrid collaboration with remote employees. During a call, the minutes of the meeting are recorded and emailed to participants automatically.

The BEEAH Group worked closely with Microsoft, Johnson Controls and EVOTEQ to implement the next-generation technologies at the BEEAH Headquarters. EVOTEQ is a venture of BEEAH Digital, the Group’s digital transformation and future technologies business. Under BEEAH Digital, re.life is another venture with a digital ecosystem conceived to realise the next level of convenience for people, at home and in the workplace. BEEAH Digital will also be building the first Data Centre in the Emirate of Sharjah. In addition to featuring cutting-edge technologies from the industry, the headquarters also showcases the success of the Group’s digital ventures.

“Combining the powerful technologies from Microsoft and Johnson Controls with the expertise of EVOTEQ, BEEAH has successfully created a future-ready headquarters. Our workplace innovations and Metaverse applications will continue as we further our global operations,” Khaled Al Huraimel said.

In addition to the pioneering technological innovations in the building, the BEEAH Headquarters also boasts a sustainable design. Accounting for the natural wind conditions and ambient temperature, the Zaha Hadid designed building is shaped, constructed, and finished to minimise energy requirements and be in harmony with the environment. Digital twin technology and predictive AI further optimise energy consumption, realising LEED Platinum standards of operation.

Members of the media are requested to email communication@beeahgroup.com for more information on the BEEAH Headquarters.

Michelin Takes Teen Drivers’ Safety to New Levels With #GoldenGauge Program

  • During Teen Driving Awareness Month, new gaming-centric program offers teens and new drivers the opportunity to win game-changing prizes – from laptops to gaming consoles – just for checking their tires.
  • The #GoldenGauge program is the latest iteration of Michelin’s award-winning, multi-year corporate social responsibility program, Beyond the Driving Test, designed to increase tire safety education and ultimately save teens’ lives.

GREENVILLE, S.C. – January 25, 2022 – Michelin is giving teens and new drivers the opportunity to level up their knowledge of life-saving tire safety in exchange for the chance to win epic, game-changing prizes with the Michelin #GoldenGauge program.

Teens understand that in the world of gaming, items like a new gaming console, a particular gaming laptop, or an in-game booster pack will help them “level up,” improving their overall game experience and performance. In the real world, tires are the game-changers that take road safety and vehicle performance to the next level — and properly maintained tires can be the difference between avoiding an accident and being in one.

To teach tire safety and drive teens to take action, Michelin will reach users through a digital billboard within the highly popular The Sims FreePlay mobile game. Players navigating SimTown will have the opportunity to safely stop and engage with the billboard visible from the town map, and they will be rewarded with premium in-game currency and life-saving tire safety tips.

“Meeting teens at the intersection of their passions and speaking their language has always been the North Star of Beyond the Driving Test,” said Alexis Garcin, chairman and president of Michelin North America, Inc. “While tires may not be high on the list of things teens think about currently, we can engage with them through their favorite games to ensure they understand that safer tires can mean safer driving.”

Car crashes remain a top killer of U.S. teens, with an estimated seven teens dying every day, and hundreds more injured.1 On average, there are nearly 11,000 tire-related motor vehicle crashes each year.2 The good news is many of these accidents are preventable.

Enter the Michelin #GoldenGauge campaign, designed to encourage teens to exchange one game-changing action (checking their tires) for the chance to win game-changing prizes, from a new laptop to the latest gaming console or smartphone. To learn whether they are a winner, teens must first properly check their tires. Here’s how it works:

  • Visit www.GoldenGauge.com and enter your mailing address
  • Within a few weeks, a Michelin-branded tire pressure gauge will arrive at your door
  • Use the pressure gauge to check your tires (step-by-step instructions are available HERE)
  • When the gauge is properly fastened to the tire valve, a pressure indicator stick will pop out. The color of the stick will indicate if you have won a prize:
    • LEGENDARY GOLD: An epic bundle of game-changing prizes, including a latest generation gaming console (complete with headset, controllers and gaming bundle), a gaming laptop and chair, a VR headset, a Pixel smartphone, and a set of MICHELIN® CrossClimate®2 tires.
    • RARE PURPLE: One of several high-tech prizes designed to elevate your game, ranging from a gaming laptop to a Pixel smartphone. Plus, every winner gets a set of MICHELIN® CrossClimate®2 tires.
    • ELITE BLUE: A $100 Twitch gift card
    • COMMON WHITE: Not a prize winner, but your safety is priceless!

Eager to Emerge Victorious in the War for Talent, Employers Turn to Their Own Ranks

Internal promotions, internal recruiters, and referrals among top-ranked tactics for filling vacancies

New York City (Jan. 14, 2022) – Over two-thirds (69%) of U.S. companies expect to increase their workforces this year, yet nearly nine in 10 (89%) believe it’s going to be a pain in the you-know-what.

To cope, employers are reevaluating their efforts to fill vacant roles. According to XpertHR’s recently released Recruiting and Hiring Survey for 2022, promoting from within, leveraging internal recruiters, and trusting employee referrals are among the most effective recruitment methods for winning the current talent war. Also, companies are generally willing to negotiate salaries after an offer has been made.

The new data is drawn from XpertHR’s survey of 325 U.S. employers across various industries and workforce sizes. The findings offer valuable insight into how companies are dealing with the most pressing human resource concern of 2022: recruiting and hiring. Among the results:

– 80% of companies perceive both internal employee promotion and internal recruiters as “somewhat” or “very” effective solutions for the current talent shortage.

– Ads on online job boards (such as Indeed or Glassdoor) were deemed effective by just over three out of four responding organizations (76%).

– Employee referrals (72%) rounded out the top four most effective methods organizations are using to attract talent.

– Nearly nine in 10 (89%) responding organizations are open to negotiating salaries for either some or all positions once a job offer has been made.

– While employers appear willing to talk dollars and cents when it comes to salary, just 37% of organizations are open to negotiating bonuses, while only 32% are willing to negotiate benefits.

“Interestingly, our survey indicates that what we’d classify as ‘internal’ activities—such as promoting from within, leveraging in-house recruiters and trusting employee referrals—are perceived as among the most effective recruiting methods,” said Emily Scace, Legal Editor at XpertHR. “This suggests that those companies whose employees feel connected to and inspired by the internal culture may have an advantage in the tussle for talent.

How long should businesses expect to wait before open roles can be filled? XpertHR’s survey found that the time to fill a vacancy typically increases as the supervisory nature of the role increases, with staff-level roles taking a median of 30 calendar days to fill, compared with a median of 60 calendar days for manager-level vacancies, and a median of 90 calendar days for executive-level positions.

XpertHR’s Recruiting and Hiring Survey 2022 was conducted from Nov. 9 to Dec. 3, 2021. The survey included responses from 325 U.S. employers of various industries and workforce sizes, representing over 570,000 workers. The survey report explores key aspects of recruiting and hiring, such as candidate-attraction methods and their effectiveness, soft skills and how they are evaluated in the hiring process, the post-pandemic future of video interviews, the time it takes to fill positions, vacancy costs, and more.
